    Have I missed something?

As far as I can tell, we haven't actually seen an invite to this media event, so how do we know it's actually going to happen? If Apple are having trouble with some of the proposed releases, what's to prevent them delaying till later in the month or even early October?

Amazing! I totally agree, I don't mind paying higher taxes here for better services and better rights.

I know someone who works in the public sector was told to get his working hours down because he was working more than the amount he was supposed to by law in his job. Was told to get it down to 42 hours a week I think.

Guess that would never happen on your side of the pond!

Well, only because they might have to pay you overtime. If they have to pay you extra or a premium overtime wage, they will try hard to not let you get to that point. Not because they don't want you working too much, but because they don't want to have to pay you for your time.

True story: I work in exhibit installations. One time, several years ago, the install was running WAY behind schedule. My part of the job is not possible to complete until everybody else is done with theirs. Design changes were so crazy that my job turned into a nightmare. Opening day is set in stone, so
there is no pushing it back. In the end, myself and my assistant had to work seven 20-hour days in a row in order to get everything completed. When I turned in my invoice, with obvious gobs of overtime on it, it was sent back saying "We pay you a day rate. A day is 24 hours. Your rate covers however much you have to work in a day." That lasted all of about 4.3 seconds before I was screaming at someone. I finally got my overtime pay, but not without a fight. And now, it's part of the deal. Just the fact that anyone could even consider that makes me angry.

I've been holding out to buy a mac for a long time.

I'm currently using one that my work purchased for me, but am not sure that I could justify buying one on my own just yet.

The buying guide here shows an average of 215 days between releases. However, the latest release was something like 300+ days, so time seems to be increasing.

That said, a new release would be due between late september and mid december.

My guess is that this revision will be the one that finally pushes me over the edge. Why?
    - They will almost certainly fix the stupid sharp edge
    - The CPU will be fast enough for anything I need for a long time
    - It will be the new generation of chassis
    - Ivy bridge for lower heat/power consumption
    - Lion will be released. I don't want to pay for that upgrade and I absolutely need resizable windows from all edges.

What worries me the most is:
    1. Will the 13.3" get discrete graphics? If yes, I'll buy
    2. Will the screen be IPS? Probably not a dealbreaker, but important.

The very fact that people think they "deserve" vacation days is mind-boggling. Why should you "Deserve" to get paid a single dime you did not earn?

I work about 60% self-employed free lance, and 40% at my old "day job". Guess what. Neither one offers me "vacation days". Am I miserable? Hardly!

If I want a vacation day, I simply do not work. That also means I do not get paid. It would seem mighty pretentious of me to be expect pay for work not done.

If you want a job with more vacation days, FIND ONE! no one owes you a darn thing, certainly not pay for days off. Most salaried workers don't get paid overtime. Benefits are supposed to balance the "cons" of working a salaried position, imo.

There is an upside to being exempt. While it's true I don't get paid extra if I work 45 hours this week, I will also not be paid less if I work 35 hours next week. In my job one is just as likely as the other.

I haven't had a salaried job that allowed someone to take a less than 40 hour work week unless via paid vacation/sick days.

In the end, I try to make sure I don't work more overtime than I receive in paid time off.

    DEATH TO MCDONALDS!!!!!!!!!

Because of them most of the US is obese.. The first thing I think that should be dismantled is fast food chains.. Those who believe in making children obese should be put up against a wall and shot in the head...

As much bad food that McDonalds has, they have plenty of stuff one can eat without getting obese. I believe in regulations on many things, but simply put it's one's own personal responsibility if they choose to eat really bad food, really often.

I go McDonald's quite regularly... I'm not fat. In fact, I'm in the best shape of my life. Just sayin'.

The free market would suck if it were run in the way your brain imagines it. But imagine if you ran a company, and your chief goal is to make a profit. Having happy employees who are payed fairly and receive vacation days, benefits, etc, is definitely a better business model than working your employees like slaves.

That only works if there are more jobs than qualified workers. Most of the time there are more workers than jobs, and employers will cut as much as they can and hire the cheapest they can get away with in the name of the bottom line.

You can hook 3+3 displays from some AMD 6000-series PCIe cards. I am not sure if it also works for 4+2 or 5+1, which would allow for different screen configurations (eg: 4x24"+2x30" or 5xSmaller+1x30"3D).Daisy chaining displays over the Display Port connector and/or the/a monitor or cabling that supports it not just Eyefinity.

I'm a pretty serious Apple fanatic and I'm willing to scrap my family's iPhones because of this. I know the government can track me anyway by watching my movement across cell towers, but this is a huge affront to privacy.

If you tie this story to the recent news from Michigan that cops there are able to suck the data off of your phone at a traffic stop, then this is really frightening.

It's about time Apple got rid of some of the rubbish materials in their machines, it's not that the campaigners are trying to brusie Apple but encourage them to be better than their competitors. I mean, Apple already has many advantages over Windows, so surely 'Green' can be one of them.

As long as Microsoft doesn't remove the power management from Vista there's no way how an operating system could be non-green...

Let's face it folks. The real success of USB 3.0 and/or Thunderbolt external connections will really depend on native support from Microsoft Windows, like it or not (Mac fans kind of ignore the fact that most new desktop/laptop computers still ship with Windows 7 installed). My guess is that we will see Window 7 Service Pack 2 (probably due early 2012) add full USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt support, while Windows 8--probably due fall 2012--will support both connections natively.

I stopped by my local Apple store and had a similar experience. Actually, it was a bit worse... they still had the old iMacs out and when I asked about the new ones, I was told "What new iMacs?"

LOL. That's kind of unusual for Apple.

It's about time that Apple realize that people want to be in pairs with the rest of the PC world. To offer a 1,66GHz while PC computers are at 2GHz...well you know?

Come on Apple, don't let us begging :-))

I think the point is that traffic laws were made to prevent stuff like this in the first place. Had you been obeying the law, there would be no issue, other than maybe a slight annoyance for a couple minutes driving a little slow.

If I'm reading this correctly, neither the woman nor you had a right to drive like that. Just because someone pulls something like a brake check, doesn't give you or anyone else the right to act dangerously. Aggressive driving is what gets people hurt or killed.

The simple fact is that I should not have to obey a 70mph speed limit if I don't want to. Why would I even bother driving a car that can hit 186mph (with the speed governor removed, with the governor top speed is 155mph) at 70 mph? A Ford Fiesta can hit those speeds, what's the point of fast cars if you're going to follow the speed limit in them?

EDIT: @ Rodimus - Had she hit me when I slammed on the brakes, she would have been at fault. All I have to do is tell the cop that I thought I saw an animal run across the road. She is supposed to keep enough distance to be able to stop if I slam on the brakes. Doesn't matter than I cut her off, she has to prove that I did, and she also has to prove that I slammed on the breaks with malice.
    -Don

seriously did you not watch the video?
mobile phone providers collect location data themselves from all phone automatically, this information is separately collected away from the mobile networks and is not (as we know) not given to the networks (and apple don't even collect it) and only stored locally.

agreed - and I don't care if it stored locally on my phone .... I'm just wondering why it is stored anyway? If it is hidden from the user, nobody else can access it ... that why is it stored? I for sure will use it from now on as a feature and revisit my many trips. Does anyone know since when this is really stored - is it worth getting my old iPhone 3G backups from TimeMachine and check them out?

Im not saying the AppleTV 2 is useless for everyone, for many of the dumb masses who are locked into iTunes already its probably the best thing since sliced bread, and really its only advantage is a cheap price and movie rentals, in glorious 720P, but if I want to feed my 42" 1080p plasma with subpar 720P video I could use the xbox or PS3 sitting under the TV, which I also dont bother with. For audiophiles or moviephiles it doesn't cut it.

I used to work in the streaming media industry from 2002-2009. Among other things, I did some work on the Netgear MP-101 (http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2499) which sold fairly well. We always got the latest gear for competitive analysis, including Sonos systems and other high-end solutions costing thousands of dollars.

Strictly IMO, proprietary, expensive closed ecosystems such as Sonos (and there are/were worse) are a dead end and naturally once you've bought into it you have a vested interest in its survival. The same thing can be accomplished, more cheaply, with products from mixed vendors supporting an open system like UPnP/DLNA.

The exception is Apple -- while their solution is proprietary and the ecosystem is largely closed, it is a massive closed ecosystem (Macs, iDevices) and Apple keeps the "dumb rendering points" such as the Airport Express and ATV2, cheap. My company tried several times to open doors with Apple, to be their gateway into the UPnP/DLNA world. Apple's only interested in what benefits Apple -- i.e. how does supporting UPnP/DLNA help Apple sell hardware? So Apple will always be a closed ecosystem but it's a very very diverse and healthy one.

Sonos is dead, they just don't know it yet. When you can get something that does 90% of what it does for 10% of the price, you're dead.

It's like those audiophiles who argue endlessly about if gold plated or silver plated speaker wire sounds better.

true, but there is a parralel could be drawn between audiophiles and mac "zealots".

and its fiber optic vs copper plated. its the rca connectors taht would be gold or silver plated, and yes, gold sounds better, transfers signal better.

    my two cents :)

During the meanwhilst, any news from Amazon Unbox ?

    How well did they do?

Because it's easy to throw numbers at us, but withouth any comparison, it doesn't really say that much (although it's probably very good)

That's what I was going to ask. I'm very curious to see how Unbox has done, particularly since it launched a week earlier.

Because people are stupid, that's why.

No one realistically games on a Macbook Air. And the SNB IGP is actually very capable. Their GMA offerings have generally always been crap but the 3000 is quite the opposite.
Playing Wow on 11" must be quite an experience. One must be quite an addict in order to want to play Wow on an MBA while on the go, I did hear that game was highly addicting. So, from a point of view, I understand the position of the people you call "stupid". Computer game addiction is a phenomena that is hard to deal with, I used to be a game addict but nowadays no game can attract my concentration for more than a day or a week. Civ4 and Simcity 4 Rush hour are exceptions but they have low requirements anyway so that I will be able to play them "while on the go" on the 11". Otherwise, I am quite content with the cheap stuff found on the App Store.

    ...which is still a bottleneck.

So what's your point? You like moderetly better bottlenecks?

    I'd rather eliminate them altogether.

...and you think most people who buy a MBP won't swap out the drive for a 7200RPM drive or an SSD and max out their memory?

    Intelligent...no genius level thinking!

an SSD is a moderately better bottleneck?

Also storage is more important than outright speed to some people on the go. Why do you want to take away their options?

Great. Since Apple puts that crap hard drive in there.

And Apple's SSDs are sooo awesome right? About the only thing they really have an edge at is booting up and you can thank Snow Leopard enhancements as much as the SSD for that. For all other tasks...average. The kicker is, you can't even upgrade them to something better/larger down the road...as things currently stand anyway.

I don’t much care about this battle either way—I can see why Apple wants to defend the term they popularized for the ecosystem they were first to build. And I can see why they might lose. Either way won’t help or hurt any of the parties involved that much. (The Amazon Mobile Market could survive just fine, if it’s good; and a name alone won’t make any other mobile software platform come close to touching iOS!)

    But this is funny:

"the simple fact that those companies were using the term in the first place indicates that the term is generic”

In that case, if you violate a trademark, you’re automatically not violating a trademark! :p
