When was the last time Think Secret had a rumor that turned out to be true? Who cares what TS claims, this rumor about "Cingular only" is not worth losing sleep over.

Nevertheless, Apple is taking longer than I thought they would in bringing a phone to market. It does not seem like it will be introduced by Christmas and that's a pity.

So I guess this puts every iPhone VNC client in violation of Apple's terms as it would be displaying Apple copyrighted images...

I'm on RA's side on this one!

You may be right, but we haven't seen the emails or the actual rejected programs.

Furthermore, "The Client Is Always Right", not because they are, but as a matter of principle. The client is in command.

And I insist, Apple's model makes them the client, which I have to admit brings many benefits to the end user and the platform in general -not so many to the suppliers or developers, except maybe for the fact that it makes the end user more confident to part with their money, of which Apple has the numbers to prove.

I agree that $14.99 is way too high for a downloadable movie.

Agreed. When considering the fact that you presumably would not get the DVD extras, the quality would not be as good (based on compression/encoding) and you'd be watching it on a small screen, that does seem rather steep. It would be one thing if it was a high quality HD version or something, which you could also view on a normal TV as well, but that wouldn't be feasible either due to the resulting file sizes and longer download times required.

It will be interesting indeed to see how Apple handles this service...

I personally think passing around checkpoint info is protected under free speech. But, to repeat myself, anyone who is over the legal limit and uses an app to avoid a DUI is a selfish, irresponsible *******.

    +1.

Though I've heard of cops pulling people over for flashing their lights at oncoming cars to warn of speed traps... I wonder if those people managed to get out of that ticket with the "Freedom of speech" (I hope they did).

Let's face it folks. The real success of USB 3.0 and/or Thunderbolt external connections will really depend on native support from Microsoft Windows, like it or not (Mac fans kind of ignore the fact that most new desktop/laptop computers still ship with Windows 7 installed). My guess is that we will see Window 7 Service Pack 2 (probably due early 2012) add full USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt support, while Windows 8--probably due fall 2012--will support both connections natively.

    Lame.

The only way the iPhone market even makes sense is via an Apple MVNO.

Since when does Apple NOT want to "control the whole widget"? I don't want Apple controlled by the nutjob mobile providers.

As much of an Apple fanboy as I am, I would never use Cingular. But beyond that, it signals that the Apple iPhone will be incredibly lame -- just another music phone (basically an Apple ROKR/SLVR), because that is pretty much all that Cingular trades in.

My first question is if the Mac Pro offers less of a performance increase than it first appeared, (for the time being at least), would Apple use this as an argument against a Conroe Tower?

I'm still behind Apple increasing their product lines, (Conroe Tower, 13" MBP, 15 & 17" MBs), and they have effectively done just this with taking teir consumer iMac offering from 2 standard models to 4. Can we expect more of the same in the future?

Roll on September 12th and beyond.

    Conroe Tower FTW! ;)

I bought National Treasure and was actually thrilled with the quality. I have the Apple Dock with the Apple Remote, and with National Treasure on my 20" tv in my room, you COULD NOT POSSIBLY tell the diff between a DVD and the download. In fact, I had my friend bring over his copy of National Treasure on DVD, and had them both playing as we flipped back and forth on the tv and you could not tell a difference on my tv.....

Well, it is a SDTV, I have not yet played my download on our HDTV...But DVDs look fine on it, so I'm assuming this will as well.....I am very happy and will definately buy again, just need more titles....

... the provocative and renowned philosopher Cartman...

This complicates the already thorny dilemma I'd been wrestling with in this thread. Whose words should win my confidence? Whose direction on this issue should I trust? "crap freakboy"? Maybe. Some of his comments make sense, but i'm thinking, if i met him on the street and he was introduced that way, would i stay and listen...or run? Then there's "jelloshotsrule"? He's shown some insight, but you know how you can evaluate comments differently after you've seen a guy throwing up after chugging too much at a frat party? And now there's a third choice, a cartoon character? It turns out, the nine-year-old in the red jacket resolved my dilemma:

    "Cartman: Respect My Authority!"

Also, $10-15 for a d/l movies is a ripoff. Unless they are going to do HD quality movies at $15, DVDs will remain a much better value.

I agree. I'd rather buy it off Walmart for that price and convert it to iPod format, PSP format and what not. Afterall, I won't be limited to play it on 'n' number of players. Steve was right when he said few years back that movie downloads does not work. Off course, any new addition to the store will not hurt.

If there were a special event like the one described iLounge would have received one.

Thats not to say there won't be any Apple event around the Paris Expo.I'm sure there will be.Just because Jobs isn't doing a keynote doesn't mean Apple won't announce something.

This is becoming an epidemic of developers that are upset with Apple's App review process. I have no problem with Apple reviewing Apps, as it increases security for us users, BUT I think Apple needs to COMPLETELY overhaul their App process. There is no way in heck that it should take three months for a follow-up review of an App that they have already delayed. Three months is completely unacceptable in the rest of the world, and this looks VERY bad for Apple. Apple needs to COMPLETELY redo their completely inefficient app-review process, and get back up with the standards that the rest of the world operates on. If it took me three months to do anything, I would never have graduated college. They gave us due dates, and we did our work! It works the same way at my job. People aren't given three months to get things done. Apple gets an "F" on this one! "A day late, a penny short."

the original quote was to "G5/PPC fanboys," not "970MP fanboys." But whatever. My point is that it's hardly surprising that a bleeding edge chip beats an old one. That's kinda the point of technological progress, no?

So then AMD and IBM are dead in the water? Somebody better call them and tell them.

Believe it or not, the fact that intel is releasing new chips does not mean that the other companies have given up or that intel has "won." IBM's desktop and server chips have been and will continue to be very competitive. Apple switched because PPC was not cutting it for laptops.

1st of all I said Apple not IBM or AMD. AMD is going to get a through ass kicking for the next 12-18 months till K8L comes out. The Turion X2 is a flop(that's also 6 months late) It's so bad for AMD that they are practically having a fire sale on X2/A64's come the 24th. Let's not even go there with IBM they are too busy making toy CPU's for M$ , and talk about the nightmare IBM/Sony are having with the Cell yields(what are they like 20-30%).lol:D

Not keynote at AppleExpo Paris, but a press event that day in the US and streamed to London? So crazy it might be true...

$15 downloads just won't fly with me, nor will $10. As it stands, I can buy a DVD from Amazon for $10, get it the next day, and not have to back it up somewhere... Gotta get it down to $5 or less for me to be interested-- maybe $10 for pre-releases.

I'm all over a video iPod though.

So, here is an interesting argument, as app is short for Applications, and Applications are a strict subset of programs, doesn't the App Store technically sell Programs, not Apps? Thus, the term is no generic at all. "Program Store" would the generic term. It's the same as a club called "Liqueur Store" (which is TMed.)

Interesting indeed. But i would argue that app, application and program are all equally interchangeable.

A club can call itself "Liqueur Store" all it wants. It is not a store that sells liqueur. It's a club that sells liqueur.

Because they use the same battery, how can videos play longer and not music?

Either the video playback code was improved to be less power hungry (maybe it uses less CPU, maybe it doesn't need to spin the disk as much), or an improved video chip was put in which uses less power.

Driving 1.5 hours to the Apple store this morning and the same on the way back. But I am not buying yet, just looking and getting a feel for the entire line. Oh I forgot.... and turning green with envy. Boy is going to be hard.

I've been calling around, there are 3 stores near me but none have a 24" iMac for me to look at yet. :( I'm looking to see what the annoucement is on Tuesday is...Cube redux?

That can be viewed another way. Apple is too cheap to bother risking anything that is not a sure bet.

    Wrong.

    The exact OPPOSITE is true.

Apple takes some serious risks. How else do they move the entire industry in new directions?

iPhone. iPad. Both massive risks. Both were dismissed by major industry players. The iPad especially was dismissed by a lot of folks on MR. Vertical business model in an industry where everyone in in a race to the bottom and where some version of Windows dominates on computers. Big risk. Completely ditching OS 9 overnight and moving to OS X. Big risk as well. Apple is really the only one on the block that bothers to try new things.

Here's some claim chowder. Mmmm, deeeelish!

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=9197388&postcount=166

Am I the only one who thinks Acer is right and they are not worried nor expect the iPad to do little to no damage to their netbook market.

The iPad is basicly nothing more then a iPod touch with a bigger screen. Yes the bigger screen offers some extras stuff but still you suffer the same limitition of the iPhone/iPod Touch OS and are trapped in apple's sand box.

The iPad is not going to replace a traveling computer because it is just way to limited. It has piss poor way of connecting to USB/SD card. You are still required to carry a dedicated keyboard if you want to get much work done that way and so on.

The Netbook on the other had is a great for business travelers. It is a full flege computer. Yeah it has a small screen but it is the same size a the iPad and a full size keyboard and more powerful OS.

iPad is a consumer level devices. Netbook is a bussiness/Enterprise level device. That is 2 very different markets. The Netbook is not designed to replace a deticated desktop/Main laptop neither is the iPad. Netbooks are designed to make traveling with a computer a hell of a lot nicer.

    Lets compare the 2.

Checking Email-- I give that to the iPad.
Responding to Email - Netbook due to keyboard.
    Over all email - Netbook

Surfing the internet - Netbook due to flash support

    Reading the news - iPad.
    Reading books - iPad.

Getting real work done (word documents excel sheets ect.) -- Netbook.

iPad - Consumer device something apple has proven it is damn good at.

Netbook --Enterprise/ Bussiness device -- Something apple has shown time and time again it has craptactor support and does not really even bother making stuff to into that market.

So what happened? This "oversized iPod Touch" did this:

    http://www.geekwire.com/2011/microsoft-profits-top-expectations-xbox-office-trump-pc-slump

In its quarterly filing, Microsoft indicated that the consumer PC market was the primary culprit for the decline pointing in particular to a 40 percent decline in netbook sales in the consumer market. Thats more evidence of the iPads impact on the market. Many consumers are opting for the Apple slate rather than Windows-based netbooks to fill the gap between the PC and the phone.

    40% decline in netbooks, huh?

Remember seeing articles like these a while back?

David Carnoy, February 2009: "Why Apple Must Do a Netbook Now"
Preston Gralla, March 2009: "Why Apple Will Have to Release a Netbook"
Charles Moore, March 2010: "Apple Still Needs a Sub-$700 Conventional Notebook"

Apple TOOK A RISK and did the iPad instead. And look what happened.

Cheap netbook junk is circling the drain and major players are suddenly in the tablet game full-tilt. AFTER Apple laid the groundwork. Apple's big risks pay off. Whether Apple thinks they're a "sure thing" is a different story. They're likely pretty confident in what they produce because they know better than everyone else, whether it's the other major industry players, pundits, etc.

MS' backbone is their universal licensing racket. Winblows on PCs. No need to innovate. Blame netbook decline. Blame a "market reset." Blame your mom. But never blame your aging cash cow whose udders are now almost completely dry. MS is NOT a risk-taker. Especially in the enterprise. Especially in operating systems. Especially by copying Apple 3 years late ALMOST EVERY TIME. Let Apple take the risks, and then Zune it! Or release a smartphone no one really gives a damn about.

Please, don't go talking about risks. Because the only one to have any friggin' shred of creativity in the industry and the power to mass produce the fruits of it is Apple. Their moves for the past decade have been nothing less than complete and total daring. They often come out of left field with products that no one initially understands, that are laughingly dismissed by other major players (Ballmer on the iPhone, nearly everyone on the iPod), but that we end up using and everyone else ends up copying shortly after. Part of the reason an industry player that does the exact opposite of the other major players is about to surpass Exxon Mobil as the most valuable company on the planet.
